The Manuscript File Collection on Early University History is a rich source on 19th-century and early 20th-century developments at the University of Iowa. It consists of the University's earliest known records documenting its business transactions, academic activity, and external communications. For the most part the material was prepared or received by William J. Haddock (1832-1906), secretary to the Board of Trustees, later Regents, from 1864 to 1901. It is also considered the foundation collection of the University Archives, as it resulted from the first institutional attempts to document University of Iowa history.

  • Chemistry. Laboratory. According to the general catalogs, the Laboratory was called the Chemical Laboratory from the 1863-1864 school year through the 1869-1870 year.  The laboratory was called the Physical Science Laboratory from 1870-1871 through 1887-1888.  The 1888-1889 Catalog lists the laboratory as both the Physical Science Laboratory and the Chemistry Laboratory.  Both of these departments were located in North Hall at that time, and perhaps the terms were used interchangeably.  After 1890 however, the Chemical Laboratory was housed in the new Chemical Laboratory Building, while the Physical Science Laboratory remained in North Hall.  Therefore, all papers relating to either of these laboratories prior to 1890 (when the Chemical Laboratory was constructed), are filed under Physical Science, Laboratory.  Papers dated after 1890 are filed under Chemical Laboratory, unless they clearly relate to Physics.

  • Physical Laboratory. Therefore, all papers relating to either of these laboratories prior to 1890 (when the Chemical Laboratory was constructed), are filed under Physical Science. Laboratory. Papers dated after 1890 are filed under Chemical Laboratory, unless they clearly relate to Physics.
