Summary:Administrative dean at the University of Iowa (1944-1974). Correspondence, notebooks, and speeches relating to Dakin's many civic interests and activities. Topics included are Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America, and U of I.

Allin Winston Dakin was born on June 2, 1905, in Mason City, Iowa. He attended Mason City High School and received a B.A. in 1926 and a M.A. in 1927 from the University of Iowa, where he was President of the student government of the College of Liberal Arts in 1926. In 1931, he earned a M.B.A. from Harvard University's business school, and in 1961 awarded a doctorate of laws by Westmar College. From 1944 to 1953, Dakin was an administrative dean and the assistant to the President of the University of Iowa. He was an administrative dean, working with finances, from 1953 until his retirement from the University of Iowa.
 
Active in community and service organizations, Allin Dakin was twice a director of Iowa City's Chamber of Commerce (1949-1951 and 1958-1961). He was also a past chairman of the Iowa City Airport Commission. Allin Dakin was chairman of every position involving Rotary International. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the National Council of Boy Scouts of America. At the age of 87, Mr. Dakin died in Coralville, Iowa, on September 17, 1992.

The papers of Allin Dakin consist of 17 boxes of manuscripts measuring 24 linear feet that date from 1940 to 1981. Eleven of these boxes contain notebooks concerning Rotary International. There are two more boxes relating to the Boy Scouts of America and the United Nations Association. Included here are correspondence folders and speeches. Other notebooks deal with such topics as University of Iowa Rose Bowl trips and campus planning committee reports.
