The Iowa City chapter of "Take Off Pounds Sensibly" (TOPS) was chartered on September 8, 1965 by the national organization, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Iowa City chapter chose the daisy as their club flower. They held weekly meetings with the objective of attaining and maintaining their ideal weight. TOPS provided a social outlet to help women overcome the causes of obesity, including frustration, lack of confidence and loneliness. On achieving their ideal weight and maintaining it for a minimum of three months, TOPS members graduated into KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly), which was dedicated to the equally difficult objective of maintaining long-term weight loss.

The TOPS Club records date from 1965 to 2004 and measure 10 linear inches. The records consist of eight scrapbooks, which detail TOPS history over a forty-year period, from 1965 to 2004. The first scrapbook contains the founding certificate of the club, its by-laws, and meeting minutes as well as a guide to good eating and alternatives to over-eating. One newspaper article describes how, during the club's first month, its members collectively lost 135 pounds. Most of the scrapbooks illuminate club activities through newspaper clippings, photographs, membership lists and occasional songs. The KOPS scrapbook consists of before and after photographs of members together with personal stories and the skits members wrote to celebrate progression to KOPS. The 2003 to 2004 notebook recording the weight loss of individual members for that period concludes the collection.
