Dorothy Rubenstein was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1910. After graduating from Fort Dodge High School in 1928, Rubenstein attended Fort Dodge Junior College through 1930. Rubenstein attended the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) and graduated with honors from the School of Journalism and Communication in 1932. Rubenstein made her career in Federal Service; she worked for the Federal Civil Service in Des Moines and Omaha, the United States Army Engineers, and Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. When she retired in 1969, Rubenstein held over 36 years of Federal Service Credit. Between 1980-1989 Rubenstein lived in Phoenix, Arizona, and later in Des Moines, Iowa, with her long time companion William Little. In 1996, Rubenstein established the Dorothy Rubenstein Award for students in the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Rubenstein died in 2004.
