Joy Smith was born in the early 1920s in rural Iowa. After graduating from high school in 1938, she attended McPherson College, which was operated by the Church of the Brethren in McPherson, Kansas. After graduating in 1942, Smith married a fellow McPherson alumnus and pastor Wilburn Lewallen. For the next thirty years the Lewallens served churches throughout the Midwest including Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana.

The Joy Smith Lewallen memoir was written in 1985 and is 103 pages long. The memoir consists of a typed, unpublished memoir entitled "This is My Story, This is My Song", 1985 by Joy Smith Lewallen and an undated Christmas card with photographs of the Lewallen family.

Lewallen recounts her life from attending college during the Great Depression and World War II, to the lives of the Smith and Lewallen families in rural Iowa and North Dakota, and anecdotes of the churches and people she and her husband served during the 1940s through the 1970s.
Marianne Michael papers, Iowa Women's Archives:  Michael was the college roomate of Joy Smith at McPherson College and later served with her husband as missionaries for the Church of the Brethren in Garkida, Nigeria from 1948 to1961.
