Adelia St. John Gates graduated from Genesee College in upstate New York and moved to Waterloo, Iowa, as a bride. Her husband John Cook Gates (1838-1917) practiced law in Waterloo with the Gates and Liffring law firm. Gates Park in Waterloo is named for this family.

Journal containing address to class of 1863; attendance records; recipes; household hints; and commercial housekeeping accounts and building accounts.  Biographical information written by the donor and obituaries of John C. Gates are also included.
