Josephine Witmer Van Liew was born in Des Moines in 1890 and attended West Des Moines High School, where she was secretary of the class of 1908. Part of her duties as class secretary included keeping minutes of class meetings and arranging class reunions. Josephine Witmer married John Edgar Van Liew. She died in 1985. Their daughter Virginia Van Liew donated these materials.

The Josephine Witmer Van Liew papers date from 1908 to 2000 and measure one linear inch. They consist of the West Des Moines High School yearbook The Tattler Annual, 1908 and the secretary notebook for the West Des Moines High School class of 1908. The secretary book includes minutes of senior class meetings in 1908, an entry canceling a projected tenth-year reunion in 1918 due to the war, records of the fiftieth class reunion in 1958, and notes from the sixty-fifth reunion in 1983.
