Mae Ludemann, high school history teacher, was born in Kesley, Iowa, on December 26, 1900. She was one of twelve children born to Sander Ludemann and Remda Boekleman Ludemann. In 1910 the Ludemann family moved to Parkersburg, Iowa, where Ludemann graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1918. After graduation, Ludemann attended the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa), where she received a bachelor of arts degree in history and was active in the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Ludemann taught high school history in Burlington, Iowa, before embarking on a European summer tour under the guidance of Professor Steven Bush, a French teacher at the State University of Iowa.

After returning to the United States, Ludemann was admitted to the University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in History. A few years after her trip abroad Ludemann suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning, but recovered. Ludemann never married. She died in January 1997, at the age of ninety-six.

The Mae Ludemann papers date from 1926 to 1943 and measure 2 linear inches. The papers are arranged in three series: European Trip, Student Records, and Photographs.

The European Trip series (1929) includes Ludemann's travel diary, correspondence, and travel literature, as well as an article written by Ludemann's niece which appeared in Victoria Magazine in the June 1997 issue.

The Student Record series (1926 and undated) include official transcripts for the University of Iowa and the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as certificates and a diploma.

The Photographs series (dates unknown) include an album of candid snapshots as well as a sorority photograph. The majority of the photographs are in the album, and consist mainly of pictures from Ludemann's college years and early in her teaching career. The pictures include ones of Ludemann's friends, sorority sisters, as well as herself and her mother. Many of the photographs come from Ludemann's numerous trips abroad to such places as the Colorado Rockies, Lake Louise, Canada, and the Grand Canyon.
