Suzanne Lillian Bunkers, English professor and diarist, was born in 1950 in Granville, Iowa, to Verna Klein Bunkers and Jerome A. Bunkers. She attended Iowa State University, graduating with a BS in English education with honors in 1972, and an MA in English literature in 1974. In 1980, Bunkers received a PhD in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She began teaching at Mankato State University (now Minnesota State University-Mankato) in 1980. In 1985, she gave birth to Rachel Susanna Bunkers. Bunkers wrote, edited, and co-edited several books about women diarists, three of which are included in the collection.

The Suzanne Bunkers papers date from 1964-2007 and measure six linear feet. The papers are arranged in five series: Biographical, Diaries, Correspondence, Scrapbooks, and Professional.

The Biographical series spans from 1966-2007, and includes school notes, newspaper clippings, professional biographical statements, and other materials.

The Diaries series includes 97 volumes of diaries, dating from 1970 to 2002. Bunkers wrote about academic life, current events, politics, feminism, travel, sexuality, divorce, motherhood, grief, and health.

The Correspondence series spans from 1966 to 1998, and is largely comprised of letters Bunkers exchanged with family members, especially her mother. Also in this series is a short note, written in 1993, to Bunkers from Hillary Rodham Clinton (Box 9).

The Scrapbooks series is comprised of newspaper clippings from 1964-1972, assembled by Bunkers during her high school and college years.

The Professional series dates from 1979 to 2000, and includes Bunkers's resumes, research materials, and publications.
