Marjorie Jean Bertalot Block was born an identical twin, on July 22, 1923, in Spring Valley, Minnesota. She and her twin sister helped their father in his harness shop while schoolgirls and graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1941. They both entered Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota, joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in their senior year, and graduated in 1945. After graduation, Marjorie Bertalot married Alvin Block. He taught agriculture for three years before they returned to farming. In 1964, they bought a farm northwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Marjorie Block worked as a nurse at night, farmed during the day, and raised their children. When Alvin Block died of cancer in 1970, Marjorie Block and her children moved into the town of Vinton. She continued to work as a nurse until retiring. In recent years, she has been recognized for her activities with the American Cancer Society.
