Joy Neal Kidney is a free-lance writer who lives in West Des Moines, Iowa. Her writings are concerned almost exclusively with the genealogy and history of the Goff, Wilson, and Neal families.

The papers date from September 23, 1994 to the present and measure 0.5 linear inches. They consist of photocopies of approximately sixty articles published in various central Iowa newspapers, chiefly the Times of Guthrie Center, the Des Moines Register, the Dallas County News, and 50+ Lifestyles. The articles, arranged chronologically, reflect the author's interest and research into the lives of her grandmother Leora Goff Wilson (1890-1987), her mother Doris Wilson Neal (1918- ), and their respective families. They include historical material about the areas the families lived in and where the author grew up, namely Dexter and Perry in Dallas County and Guthrie Center in Guthrie County. Of particular interest are the articles dealing with the loss of three of Leora and Clabe Wilson's sons, Dale, Danny, and Junior, in World War II. There are also articles about life in Iowa, family celebrations of Christmas and Memorial Day, astronomy, barns, winter and the changing seasons, railroads, and other topics, all told as stories about the three families which are the focus of this collection.
