Esther Thornhill moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, in 1923 when she was in the third grade and lived in Ida Grove for all of her life. Thornhill stayed home to take care of her children after she married Pete Thornhill. Previously she had worked at the Iowa Master Breeders Hatchery and Jack's Hamburger Shop in Ida Grove, Iowa.
